How much iron ore is needed to produce one tone of steel?

The percentage of iron in ore varies. Back in the day, it was on the order of 2/3rds of the ore by weight. Now 1/4th by weight is more like it. Recovery rates vary, too, but your're looking at something between 2 1/2 and 3 tonnes of ore per ton of steel.
