In the giver Why do you think the author ended the story as Jonas was traveling toward his destination?

The author ended it because, remember in the begging of the book he was very exited for December and the giver wanted him to follow his rules and what he wanted to do because it was very rulefied in the book. For example, u can only ride a bike at the age of 9 and up. and also that u give ur stuffed animal away at the age of 8
