Why were teepes important?

Tepees were important for several reasons, particularly for the nomadic Plains Indigenous peoples. They provided portable, easily assembled shelter that could be quickly set up and taken down, making them ideal for a lifestyle centered around following bison herds. Their conical shape allowed for efficient heating and ventilation, and the materials used—typically animal hides and wooden poles—were readily available in their environment. Additionally, tepees held cultural significance, often decorated with symbols and designs that reflected the identity and beliefs of the families or tribes that used them.
