Great White Sharks (Carcharodon carcharias) live in almost all coastal and offshore waters which have water temperature between 12 °C (54 °F) and 24 °C (75 °F). They generate considerable internal heat, and are able to function comfortably in much colder water than some other sharks. On the other hand, they tend not to be found in tropical waters (at least in the Summer) due to the higher water temperatures.

They survive by eating large fish, and aquatic mammals such as seals and sea lions. While there are none of the latter off the Massachusetts coast, there are numbers of large fish.
