What might it mean to analyze the politics of a work of literature?

This phrase could mean one of two things. The first most common understanding of the phrase is the examination of the politics in which the work was written, and what it could be addressing in relation. The second is simply attempting to discover the stance of the author on specific political issues of the day based upon the statements made by the author within the book and thereby learning the author's own leaning.
