Ostriches were first imported into Australia in 1868 or 1869 when the Zoological Acclimatisation Society of Victoria brought five juvenile birds from South Africa. These birds were taken to the Wimmera district of Western Victoria. Farming of ostriches was gradually begun and spread across the border to South Australia where conditions were ideal. Ineffective farming methods resulted in the release of some of these birds in South Australia in the late 1800s, and consequently there are known to be some feral populations in two quite different areas - around Port Augusta and Murray Bridge.
