The Venezuelan squall was when the British tried to dominate Venezuela to get more territory. The U.S. saw this happening and Secretary of State Richard Olney said that Britain was in violation of the Monroe Doctrine. The British rejected the relevance of the Doctrine being used here, and they were right to reject it, but the U.S. said they were willing to fight for it.

B.T.W. - Venezuela and British Guiana were having a dispute over a piece of land that was in between them and the dispute was going for over 50 years. A peaceful resolution was about to come to order but gold was discovered on this land and a peaceful resolution was no longer in anyone's mind.
