How do radio stations know how many people are tuned in?

A satellite radio receiver (for example, Siirus or XM) does NOT have any capability of transmitting data back to the transmitting satellite(s). It is a one-way system.

The service provider has no way of knowing which channels are being tuned in by how many people except by polling their customers directly.
