Find your proof of sale

This could be a bill of sale, copy of the title transfer, or release of liability confirmation.

You’ll need the date and the buyer’s name.

Contact the impound lot or police department listed on the notice

Explain that you sold the vehicle before the impound date.

Provide the proof of sale or release of liability.

Ask them to update their records to show you were not the owner at the time of impound.

Notify your DMV (or local vehicle registration agency)

If you haven’t already, file a release of liability / notice of transfer immediately.

Most DMVs let you do this online or by mail.

This officially records that you are no longer the owner.

Keep records of all communication

Get names, dates, and any reference numbers from police, impound, or DMV.

This protects you if you’re billed for storage or towing fees later.
