Lawrence was one of seven deacons closely associated with Pope Saint Sixtus II. His work was to distribute money to the poor. During the persecutions of the Roman Emperor Valerian, the Pope and the six other deacons were taken prisoner and beheaded, leaving Lawrence as the leader of the church. He was told by authorities to bring to them all the wealth of the church and to surrenderd himself for execution. He quickly distributed what little wealth the church had to the poor and gather together all the poor, crippled, blind and sick he could find and surrendered himself to the emperor, telling him that these people were the true wealth of the church. He was taken prisoner and executed by being thrown onto a hot grill above a slow fire. Before he died he is reported to have told his executioner to, "Turn me over. I'm done on this side."
