What is the meaning of a debut party?

When a girl reaches a certain age (usually 18), upperclass parents often present their daughter to society with a debut or coming out party. In the old days, the girl (debutante) would have reached a proper courting age and was presented with a string of socially acceptable young men to choose from (or to choose her) for courtship and, with the parents hopes and wishes, future marriage.
