Why did Leonardo davinci draw?

Leonardo became the apprentice of Verrocchio, and even worked on The Baptism of Christ with him. Eventually he was comissioned by religious people to paint religious scenes for them as well as worked on his own art projects. He also drew various self-portraits, or drawings of old men that were said to resemble him.
