Why didn't Nelson Mandela become president of South Africa until he was 76 years old?

South African anti-Apartheid activist, Nelson Mandela spent 27 years of his life in prison. He was not released from prison until he was 70 years old. Four years later, he became the first black president of the former Apartheid state.
