Why is the west coast prone to earthquakes?

This is because the west coast has the San Andreas fault line running through it, which is part of the Pacific Ring of Fire, an area of intense seismic activity. This is where tectonic plates meet, and so are constantly moving, shifting or grinding against each other, which causes earthquakes.
