The terms "food" and "drink" are not mutually exclusive. Dictionary.com defines "drink" as "to swallow the contents of (a cup, glass, etc.)." While this is generally the most commonly accepted form of eating a smoothie (some other popular ways to eat smoothies are eating them with a spoon or slurping them out of a dish), this does not eliminate smoothies from being considered a "food" also.

Dictionary.com defines "food" as "a nourishing substance that is eaten, drunk, or otherwise taken into the body to sustain life, provide energy, promote growth, etc."

Since smoothies sustain life, provide energy, and promote growth, we can cease to consider smoothies as a "drink" the moment they are consumed, when they become "food" for the body.

Smoothies are, therefore, a food AND a drink, although due to their considerable nutritional properties, we should consider them first and foremost a food.
