Easiest way I have found that work on nets up to about 8' is as follows:

# Loop the net line around the wrist of the hand you will throw with and tighten. If you don't, your first cast will be your last as your net sinks to the bottom. # Coil remainder of line up in the same hand. Doesn't have to be extremely tight but you do have to coil it in a way that you can release it easily when you throw. # Pull the circle or sliding nut on the cast net up to the top of your hand. When the nut reaches the top part of the net, where the rope attaches, then grab the net just under the nut.You should now be holding the rope coils and top of net in your right hand (if right handed). At this point the net should be hanging more or less straight down. # Check the net to be sure it is tangle free. Reach down with your left hand and grab the lead line of the net at the most forward facing part of the net. Pick up the lead and place it between your finger and thumb of the right hand. The right hand is now done. # Now reach down to the lead line again with your left hand, again grab the most forward facing part of the lead line and straighten up. You should now have a more or less tight line of lead between your right hand and the lead you are holding in your left. # At this point about 3/4 of a small net will be more or less open with the remainder of the lead weight somewhat bunched together behind you.

# It's now time to throw. Feel the weight in your right hand and twist your body to the left. Let your right hand come over your left as you throw releasing the right first and then the left. You should be or at least feel like you are slightly spinning the net in a counterclockwise direction as you release. # That's it..the net should open up and lay out in a soft circle over your cast area. # Important note- it sounds pretty easy but like anything else it takes practice! Get out in the backyard and try it until you get comfortable about the how and when of the release.
