Which fleet improvement were introduced in the navy in the later cold war years?

The Aegis Combat System is the most important fleet improvement of the last 50 years. It is an integrated system of very powerful radars, computers and missiles that together cast a protective dome over not only the ship it's on, but all the ships close to it.

The system has only one major problem: its radars are so powerful they can instantly cook any bird that flies too close to the ship carrying them.
