Kuru was discovered by Australian physician Dr. D. Carleton Gajdusek in the 1950s. He studied the neurological disease among the Fore people of Papua New Guinea, where it was transmitted through ritualistic cannibalism. Gajdusek's research highlighted the disease's symptoms and its connection to prion proteins, leading to a greater understanding of prion diseases. His work earned him the Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine in 1976.
