King Henry the VIII broke away from the Catholic Church and formed the Church of England. He came into conflict with the Church because he wanted to divorce Catherine of Aragon and marry Anne Boleyn, but the Church would not grant the divorce. This is the most commonly mentioned reason, but he had other political and financial reasons. He could seize the Catholic monasteries and their gold and silver ornaments and sell them to wealthy land owners. The English protestants wanted freedom from Catholic rule and believed the Church was corrupt.
