The iphone should be recognised as a camera, when connected to the Mac, in both Image Capture and iPhoto (in the applications folder). You can then import pictures to your computer and delete them from the iphone.

2. Use a program called FonePaw iOS Transfer to transfer iphone photos to Mac directly.
Launch FonePaw iOS Transfer>Conect iphone to Mac> Click "Photos" in the left side column>Select the photos or videos you wang and click "Export to Mac"
BTW, this program also allows you to transfer videos such as movies, TV shows, iTunes U, Music Videos and so on to Mac directly.
3. Use AnyTrans to transfer iphone Photo to Mac directly.
1. Free download and install AnyTrans on Mac, and then connect your iphone to Mac via a USB cable.
2. Run it, click "Photos" and choose the Photo albums you want to transfer to Mac, such as, Camera Roll, Photos Library, Photo Stream, Photo Share, Panorama, Album, Bursts Photos.
3.Pick up the Photos you need to transfer to Mac, then click on To Mac button to complete.
