What is the use of tying a torniquet?

its a way of restricting blood flow..say someone was shot in the leg, so they tied a tourniquet off around their thigh so they didn't bleed too much or even to death. its basically an attempt at pinching off a vein or artery.

It is also a VERY dangerous process in itself. Tissues may die from the blood supply being cut off by the tourniquet. It is properly used only as a last resort to control PROFUSE bleeding- as in an amputation.
