Why does Caesar ask Mark Antony to touch Calpurnia with the leather thong he will carry in the race which is part of the celebration of the Luperacal?

The Romans believed that if a woman was touched by one of the runners in the race at the Lupercal it would make her fertile. Presumably Caesar was interested in hearing the pitter patter of little feet.
