What are some examples of rhetorical questions?

A rhetorical question is a figure of speech in the form of a question, which are not asked to get answers but to present a point more effectively.

Examples:

• Am I a fool wasting my time with you?
• Are you crazy?
• Am I my brother's keeper?
• Have you taken leave of your senses?
• Am I teaching to statues?
• Am I talking to walls?

If you are in trouble your teacher might ask you questions, and they want you to think about it... if you are sensible and they are angry then the best thing to do is not answer and look down... also an example might be if you just want people to think about the question.

It is not just teachers who use rhetorical questions!

Examples:

1. How many times do I have to tell you to take your seat?
2. When's the last time I told you to stay out of my room?
3. Where do you think you're going?
4. Do you think Paul Revere was just on a late night outing? (long pause) No, he was a patriot who wanted colonists to be forewarned.
