How did carlisle become a vampire?

Carlisle's father was a preacher that looked for "creatures from hell" around 1600, to kill them. But his father never found a real creature, and many died not being really guilty.

When his father died, Carlisle assumed his positions, and he finally found a real cove of vampires. Carlisle and his group tried to kill them, but when Carlisle got near him the vampire struck and that's how Carlisle was turned into a vampire
