The 1804 dollar is one of the most publicized rarities in the entire series of US Coins. Mint records state that 19,570 dollars were coined, but, it was the practice in those days to use old dies as long as they were serviceable with no regard in the annual reports for the dating of the coins. It is more than probable that the 1804 total for dollars actually covered coins that were dated 1803.

Coins dated 1804 were actually made much later from discarded and reworked dies in order to create a full set of 1804-dated coins for presentation to the King of Siam. After those were made a subsequent run was also struck. The first run is referred to as "originals" and the second as "restrikes" even though both are technically restrikes.

1804 First reverse (original) sold for $4,140,000.00 in 1999. 1804 Second reverse sold for $874,000.00 in 2001. 1804 Second reverse with plain edge---Unique in Smithsonian. Many Fakes

Because of its status as the "King of U.S. Coins", the 1804 dollar is one of the most frequently counterfeited of all dates and denominations. All genuine ones have been accounted for, so any that turn up for sale outside of a major auction house are almost certainly fake.

In 1999, one sold for over $4 million at an auction, about 15 are known to exist

Genuine 1804 Draped Bust dollars are valued from $400,000.00 to more than $4 MILLION depending on type and grade. Only 19 examples are known.

Also it's a favorite for modern "Silver Rounds" made to look like the 1804 dollar.
