To start lilacs from cuttings, take a 4-6 inch cutting from a healthy lilac plant in the spring or early summer. Remove the lower leaves, dip the cut end in rooting hormone, and plant it in a pot with well-draining soil. Keep the cutting moist and in a warm, bright location until roots develop. Transplant the cutting into the garden once it has established roots.
