Why do jewelry stores hide the price tag?

So you have to ask to see it. The salesperson can then answer any questions you have and help you try the piece on. Trying on a piece of jewelry usually increases your desire to have it.

Correct, yet they do not show it in the display window to drive away potentially paying customers. for example if I saw a ring with the price tag of 10,000$, I will not want it. If it does not show the tag, I go in and try it on! (and probably be bribed to buy it...) :)
