Why did the whole entire black eye peas break up?

In the beginning of The E.N.D. (no pun intended) Will states that there has been an alteration of some sort and he wasn't lying. They now proclaim themselves to be the future, and maybe they are. Nothing really happened to them, they're just not what they used to be in American eyes. Nowadays they are absolutely HUGE in Brazil and even more so in Japan.
