Who were the Crusaders fighting against and what were they fighting for?

The F8 Crusader was America's last true gunfighter, with guns as it's primary weapon, and not missiles. The Crusader fought only one war; Vietnam, against NVAF MiG17s, MiG19s, and MiG21s.
