How does a cicada fly?

Cicadas fly using their two pairs of wings, which are membranous and can move independently. When they take off, they rapidly flap their wings to create lift, allowing them to maneuver through the air. Their flight is typically described as strong but somewhat erratic, aided by their powerful muscles that control wing movement. Additionally, cicadas use their wings to produce distinctive mating calls by rubbing them together, a behavior known as stridulation.
