The mammary gland (the breast ) is a milk-producing structure that is composed largely of fat cells (cells capable of storing fat). The fat deposits are laid down in the breast under the influence of the female hormone estrogen. Just as the surge of estrogens at adolescence encourages this process, androgens, such as testosterone, discourage it.

When the breast develops there is a development of the fat which can can be quite heavy. The Bra is worn to take that weight and to support the muscle that is attached to the sternum. Its is natural for the breast tissue to stretch especially during and just after pregnancy as the milk glands Begin their work of creating and storing milk for the baby. Many ladies feel somewhat uncomfortable when the breast tissue expands allowing the breast to sag lower on the chest wall . It is societies expectations that make this natural occurrence unfashionable. It is also a fact that those ladies with large breasts find the weight causes Back pain especially between the shoulder blades - The bra transfers some of the weight to the shoulders via the straps thus relieving some of the discomfort
