The USS Indianapolis (CA-35) broke in half in 1945 after being torpedoed by a Japanese submarine during World War II. The ship sank on July 30, 1945, leading to one of the greatest naval disasters in American history. Of the nearly 1,200 crew members aboard, approximately 300 went down with the ship, while the rest faced harsh conditions at sea, with many succumbing to exposure, dehydration, and shark attacks before rescue.
