How did the people survive in the secret annex?

The residents of the Secret Annexe feel threatened by the burglary at the warehouse because they are scared they will be discovered. Usually they could make a bit of noise at night, but if there are burglars they could be heard. If burglars are investigating the house, they could discoverer the entrance to the Secret Annexe and find them.
