Why is your 1998 Toyota 4 Runner idling high and check eng light is on?

The check engine light is on because the vehicle's computer has detected a fault that is either performance or emmissions related. Have the OBDII diagnostics scanned at an auto parts store that offers free scanning to retrieve the trouble code(s) and you will see where the problem is (probably what's causing the high idle).
