A serif is the little foot on the bottom of many printed letters, and also the small table-like top to a horizontal parts of some printed letters. For an example, look at the large green and blue "WikiAnswers" at the top left of the screen. The feet on the letters ikAnr and the little shelves on W and k are serifs. Not all fonts have serifs- those that don't are called sans-serif, sans being the french Word for without. For an example, look just below the Words WikiAnswers where you will see the Words Ask and Enter a question here. This a sans-serif font. Note. A font is what printers call a set of letters in one particular style.
