Why are the dried leaves important?

for the fact you cannot smoke wet ones. but seriously dry leaves on the floor of the forest would act as mulch for the base of plants and would be affected later by cold temperatures than without the natural mulching. i'm sure many animals use it for nesting or bedding material as well.
