In animals, meiOSis produces gametes, which are the reproductive cells: sperm in males and eggs (ova) in females. This process reduces the chromosome number by half, resulting in haploid cells that can combine during fertilization to form a diploid zygote. MeiOSis also introduces genetic diversity through crossing over and independent assortment.
