In the book Lord of the Flies how was Jack liberated from the shame of self-conciousness?

Jack found out that when he wore face paint it acted like a mask, he could act without any feelings of shame, remorse or pity because it was as if it wasn't him doing the things, he was just an observer of the actions carried out by a painted savage.
