This is what we were taught in Nursing Arts in the late 1950's: 1. When the person is on total bedrest, a draw sheet provides a clean sheet next to the skin without having to change the complete bed daily. 2. If the person perspires, vomits, or is incontinent, the draw sheet covers a waterproof pad on top of the bedsheets, making the soiled linen change easier and faster. 3. The draw sheet serves as a lifter or turner when the bedridden person needs a position change. * The draw sheet should be long enough to reach from the shoulder blades to mid thigh. It must be wide enough to provide adequate material to grasp from both sides of the bed (for 2-person lifting of the patient) and tuck securely under the mattress to prevent wrinkles (to prevent pressure on the skin).
