Mononucleosis, commonly known as "mono," is primarily caused by the Epstein-Barr virus (EBV), which is often spread through saliva. However, it can also be transmitted through other means, such as sharing utensils, drinks, or even close personal contact without direct saliva exchange. Additionally, it’s possible to contract the virus from surfaces that have been contaminated with saliva. Lastly, EBV can remain dormant in the body and may reactivate, leading to symptoms without recent exposure.
