The Roman army employed all types of soldiers. First and foremost there was the milites or common soldier with his spear, sWord and shield. They also had cavalry, slingers, bowmen and artillery men. They also recruited auxiliaries from their allies who usually were known for a military speciality, such as a slinger or cavalry fighter.
