Before you can cancel your contract without a fee, you need to have a valid reason for canceling (e.g. repeated billing issues, poor service, etc.). Not liking your phone is not a valid reason.

To cancel, follow these steps:

1. Call customer service. Get the name and call center location of the rep you are speaking with. Tell them that due to the issue your having (and be sure to tell them what the issue is), you would like to cancel your contract.

2. If they say you need to pay the fee, tell them you would like to appeal the fee.

3. Tell them to enter information about your issue into the notes section.

4. Ask the rep for the contact information of the regulatory agency for your state. If they refuse to tell you, file a complaint with the FCC (a link to the FCC's complaint site is provided at the bottom).

5. Fax a letter detailing your issue to your carrier's customer service department. Do not send it to the billing location; it must be sent to a location where it will be read.

6. Fax a copy of the letter you sent to your carrier to the regulatory agency for your state. The regulatory agency will then decide if the fee was valid.
