I have an old wing backed chair that my Mom had reupholstered years ago. I don't remember how much it cost, but I DO remember it being expensive. It was done professionally and the new fabric, which is technically a slip cover (it has zippers and can be removed, although not easily) fits like a glove. I remember Mom saying that upholstery costs go up as the complexity of the piece being reupholstered increases. IE: a large piece with many curves and angles costs more than a simple piece.
Also, you have to consider what fabric will be used to recover your treasured piece. Good, sturdy fabric costs. Lots. But it looks and wears great. Conversely, cheapo fabric looks cheap and won't wear worth beans.
Most good upholsterers will be happy to give you an estimate.
