Can cats be given dog worm medicine?

I don't know the specifics about heartworm medicine, but I read that heartworm is a parasite. If you look up Diatomaceous Earth, you will discover that it is used to kill parasites. I use it...I give it to my animals...and it is safer and more affordable than going to the doctor or a vet and getting a prescription.
