How did AVID start?

AVID, which stands for Advancement Via Individual Determination, was founded in 1980 by Mary Catherine Swanson in San Diego, California. It began as a grassroots program aimed at helping underrepresented students, particularly those in the middle academic range, to succeed in rigorous courses and prepare for college.
