Small animal or companion animal veterinarians tend to have pretty structured days. In the morning they will evaluate any animals that were hospitalized overnight and make updates to their treatment plans as needed. Then they will start into the day's appointments, which may be surgical procedures, examinations of patients brought in by their owners or a combination of both. The veterinarian will examine the animals, diagnose any conditions the animal may have and then provide treatment; the veterinarian also has to complete the paperwork associated with this such as billing information and medical records. By the end of the day, the veterinarian will check in on hospitalized patients for the last time, make sure they are comfortable for the overnight stay, finish up medical records and billing information then head home for the night.
