Is a mechanical watch the same as an automatic watch?

Sometimes the term is used interchangeably.... But they are technically different:

Automatic watches

Also known as self-winding watches, these watches use the wearer's wrist motion to wind their mainspring. Automatic watches are convenient and don't require manual winding.

Mechanical watches

These watches are manually-wound by the wearer. Mechanical watches offer a classic, hands-on experience.
