Pharmaceutical companies stopped producing Quaaludes (methaqualone) in the early 1980s after the drug was classified as a Schedule I controlled substance in the United States in 1984. This classification was due to concerns over its high potential for abuse and addiction. As a result, manufacturing and distribution of the drug were significantly curtailed.
