John Brown was caught at Harper's Ferry, Virginia, on October 18, 1859. He had led an armed raid on the federal armory there in an attempt to incite a slave rebellion. After a brief standoff with U.S. Marines led by Robert E. Lee, Brown was captured and later tried for treason. His actions and subsequent execution galvanized the abolitionist movement and heightened tensions leading up to the Civil War.
