Belgium, the Netherlands, Luxembourg, France, the UK, Portugal, Italy, Norway, Iceland, and Denmark (Europe) and the US and Canada (North America) where the founding nations of NATO (the North Atlantic Treaty Organization) when the treaty was signed in Washington DC on April 4, 1949. West Germany, Greece, Turkey, and Spain joined during the Cold War. Poland, Hungary, and the Czech Republic joined in 1999. Estonia, Latvia, Lithuania, Slovenia, Bulgaria, and Romania all joined on March 29, 2004. Future expansion of member nations may include Croatia, Albania, the Republic of Macedonia, Cyprus, Bosnia and Heregovina, Montenegro, Georgia, and the Ukraine; negotiations continue toward this end. As several of these nations are located on the Asian continent, with their membership, there will be three continents under the NATO treaty.
